A HEART DESIRING HEALING & CHANGE
I am a Black woman navigating a years-long process of uprooting myself from my dependency on the ideology of white supremacy and healing from the racial trauma it has caused and sustained. I come to you admitting that I have consumed and metabolized this ideology, as so many have, and have been working back from its damage that has caused me to question my worth, my value, my potential, my sense of belonging, and even my own enoughness.
At times in my life, this ideology of white supremacy and the subsequent racial trauma it creates has even had me out here demanding that others be followers of its preaching and teaching even as it meant my own dehumanization.
I share all of this because we have all consumed this ideology. It has formed and shaped our country and our consciousness. It’s in the very air that we breathe! Even as the racism it sustains has made us sick and called for our emotional, mental, intellectual, spiritual, and even physical deaths as Black people, we have been active survivors and perpetrators of this way of thinking and being.
It is time for this to end now.
In doing this work for many years, I have come to know that, though it would be great for racially white people to do their own work and reduce their own dependence on this ideology, the liberation for Black people cannot continue to wait for this. We must prioritize our own healing and from that internal healing do the work of changing our external world. Only then can we demand the systems and institutions in place to change so that there is true equity for all.
I desire to create spaces, both virtual and physical, where Black people can heal; places where we can actively examine our own narratives, socialization, perceptions, worldviews, and embodiments of our racial identity and all that has impacted it. I desire for the trauma and wounding associated with living while Black to be redeemed for something better. We have acknowledged the intergenerational transmission of oppression as well as resilience. I now want for us to add the component of intergenerational transmission of healing.
I desire the creation of generational psychological wealth that will fuel our legacies for years to come.
It starts here. It starts now.
